“한국선 수술 권했지만 7년째 암과 동거해도 문제 없어”- 갑상샘암 환자 윤지현 교수의 체험담윤지현 교수님께서 용감?하게도 본인의 암병력을 밝히시고, 갑상샘암의 수술에 반대하는 운동을 하고 계신다고 들었습니다. 관련하여 기사가 난 듯 합니다. 하지만, 아쉽게도 제선한의원에서 권도원박사님께 8체질치료를 받고 갑상샘암의 완치를 판정받았던 이야기는 쏙 빠졌네요. 아마도, 한국언론의 속성이겠지요? 어느신문의 의학기자가 윤교수님께 했던 말처럼 "의학은 과학이 아니라 정치"이겠지요. ㅎㅎ 그럼에도 불구하고, 신경을 써야 할 부분은 우리가 매일 만나는 너무도 많은 환자분들이 이런 용감한? 판단을 한다는 것이 현실적으로 매우 어렵다는 것이지요. 멀쩡할 갑상샘을 홀랑 떼여 놓고도 아주 좋은 치료를 일찍이 잘 받은것으로 착각하는...그러면서 평생 갑상샘호르몬제를 복용하고 관련한 불편함과 부작용을 감내해가는... 안타까운 일 입니다. 다행이 윤교수와 같은 뜻 있는 사람들의 노력으로 서서히 한국사회의 무자비한 갑상샘제거수술에 반대하는 의사들의 그룹이 나타나고 있는듯합니다. 큰 다행입니다. 더불어, 고려대학교 안형식이라는 의사와 "과잉진단(Overdiagnosis)"이라는 책으로 유명한 H. Gilbert Welch 가 함께 2014년 11월 New England Journal of Meidicine에 발표한 Korea's Thyroid-Cancer "Epidemic" - Screeing and Overdiagnosis 라는 제목의 논문을 꼭 일독해보시기 권합니다. It turns out that Professor Ji Hyun Yoon has been raising awareness of unnecessary thyroid cancer surgery, coming out her own story in an article. She herself was diagnosed with thyroid cancer 7 years ago, and she is a survivor who has been living a good and healthy life with no surgery, thanks to Dr. Dowon Kuon who cured her completely with the Eight Constitution Medicine (ECM). There is no mention about the ECM treatment by Dr. Kuon in the article but it can be assumed that it’s caused by the character of the Korean Media which has a prevalent view of ‘Medicine is not science but politics.’, based on a comment of a correspondent. However, as Korean doctors, we must focus on the fact that so many patients we encounter are struggling to make the right decisions like this. They are misled into the belief that the removal of a fully functional thyroid gland is the best treatment while they are stuck with the hormone treatment afterwards, along with its distressing side effects. It’s truly sorry to see. Fortunately, it seems that some doctors are starting to realize the seriousness of the unneeded thyroid removal surgery in the Korean medicine environment and take a stand opposition, through the efforts of the sensible like Professor Yoon. It's a big relief. Furthermore, a paper of ‘Korea's Thyroid-Cancer "Epidemic" -Screening and Overdiagnosis’ was published by Dr. Hyung Shik Ahn from the Korea University and H. Gilbert Welch, well known for his book "Overdiagnosis", on the New England Journal of Medicine in November, 2014 and I strongly recommend that you read it.
